Member Spotlight – Robert and Lou Anne Wenck
Robert and Lou Anne Wenck have been members of St. John since 1996. Having been active in St. John, with Robert served as Treasurer and Usher.
Robert was born at Fort Ord in California where his father was in the U.S. Army (retired Master Sergeant). Robert has 6 siblings (4 brothers and 2 sisters). Robert's brother is a Lutheran pastor who recently retired in Murfreesboro. Robert's family traveled extensively during his father's military career. At 6.5 weeks old they moved to Germany. From there he lived in South Carolina, Kansas, San Antonio, Texas and Japan.
Following in his father's footsteps Robert joined the Army starting his career at Fort Ord, California for Basic then to Ft. Campbell as his 1st duty station.
Lou Ann was born in Dickson; her father was also in the Army (retired Master Sergeant). Her childhood also involved living several places including North Carolina and Fort Ord, California. She has 2 sisters and 1 brother.
Robert and Lou Anne met at Fort Ord, California and were married in 1976, "on a dare". Lou Ann stated she and Robert had dated off and on since she was 16. She notes that Robert "watched cartoons with my sister, ate mom's cooking and ran all my boyfriends away". One day Lou Anne told Robert, "Since you are always hanging around, let's get married or you need to go away". Robert said "yes, let's get married". They were married one week later!
Robert and Lou Anne have three children, James, Jessica and Joey and 8 grandchildren.
Robert spent 21 years in the Army, retiring in 1996 as a Master Sergeant. Their travels included Germany, Maryland, Korea, Fort Hood, Texas, the Middle East during Desert Storm, Egypt and finally Fort Campbell, Tennessee. Robert worked initially as a keypunch operator and in supply department with the Army. He then developed a recoverable/repairable equipment items management system. Robert ended his Army career as an Army Recruiter.
Lou Ann is a Nurse. She started her career "delivering babies". She then was a School Nurse and worked in Geriatrics for the last portion of her career.
Robert and Lou Anne moved to Dickson after Robert's retirement. Lou Anne says the reason they settled in Dickson because "Robert loved my mother's cooking". Robert and Lou Anne enjoyed dancing (at the VFW). Lou Anne says, "Robert is a really good dancer", he used to go with my mother who also loved to dance on Saturday nights when Lou Anne was working.
Robert is a member of the local American Legion (Post 115) where he is a past commander. He is also a long-term member of the Dickson Fair Board. In his younger years Robert states he played "at Golf" and enjoyed motorcycles.
Lou Anne enjoys many types of crafting.
When asking Robert and Lou Anne what is the best advice you have received, or you would like to offer?
They both said, "Never fight in your marriage—it accomplishes nothing". "If you get mad both take a shower".
When asking Robert and Lou Anne, "Looking back at your life today, what are you most proud of or makes you smile?
Robert's answer was "Lou Anne" and Lou Anne's answer was "Robert".
Their life is a true love story.
Robert and Lou Anne are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary on July 20th at Burns Church of Christ from 2-5 pm. They say all members of Saint John are invited to join in the celebration.
Update from Our Adopted Deaconess – Nicole De Coux-Manners
Lois and the saints at St. John,
As unbelievable as it sounds, I am preparing to head to Fort Wayne in a few days to complete my final two-week intensive! My trip in May was to participate in my final Diakonal Formation Forum, have my theological interview (I passed, by God's grace!), and walk in the lovely graduation ceremony. It was a whirlwind, and I was so thankful that my husband was able to fly out and join me for it! I had fun showing him around Fort Wayne and the campus of CTSFW, but we couldn't stay long because I was still completing my Catechetics and Practicum classes for Spring semester.
Now, however, my final three classes are imminent: Theology of Mercy, Diakonal Counseling, and Into All the World with Confession and Care. While I feel intense relief and gratitude for all that I have learned and experienced over the past two years in the program, I must admit that approaching the end is bittersweet. Yet "for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven," (Eccl. 3:1) so I eagerly await what the Lord has in store for me and for His Church. It humbles and encourages me that the Lord has stirred up His people to support diaconal ministry in the wider church, and I eagerly look forward to possibly joining the ranks of those whom He has called to provide mercy and spiritual care to His flock.
While I do not yet know exactly what I will be doing after my program is completed, I am hopeful that it may include a part-time call as a deaconess at an LCMS congregation near to us. He knows our needs better than we do, so I trust Him to answer that prayer according to His good and gracious will.
Thank you again for your generosity toward me and your prayerful support.
In Christ,
Nicole De Coux-Manners
