With Nancy Gray
Jon & Sarah Collins
Sarah was born in 1986 in Nashville, Tennessee. She grew up in Primm Springs, TN (just a few miles SW of Fairview) in the same house that her mother grew up in. It was built by Sarah’s grandfather. Sarah has one brother. He was in the same class in school as Jon. Her brother now lives in Atlanta, GA
Jon was born in 1984 in Montgomery, AL. He grew up in a tiny, off the map area called “Slapout” Jon moved to Fairview with his parents in 1996. He has one brother who is 14 years older, and one sister 10 years older.
Jon and Sarah met in high school in 2000 when he was a Junior, and she a freshman. Both were in ROTC. Jon vowed he would never date any girls in ROTC. In 2001, Jon and Sarah had their first date: to the Junior Prom! After high school, Jon joined the Air Force to become an Airborne Cryptologic Linguist. He learned Korean in one and a half years at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. Meanwhile, Sarah – having done ballet since she was eight years old – continued taking ballet classes and performing ballet in Franklin, TN. Jon and Sarah were married in 2006 in an iris garden.
In 2011, they had their first child, Jon David. He was followed by Elijah, Lylah, and Melodie.
Jon currently works with databases for a major healthcare company. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Lipscomb University. Jon’s hobbies include playing classical guitar, woodworking, building things for the farm, cooking, small engine repair, and fly fishing. He also likes to smoke a pipe and chat theology. He also holds an FAA pilots license, though he hasn’t flown in several years.
Sarah is currently a housewife and homeschools their children. she loves teaching ballet. She used to have the only classical ballet studio in Dickson but had to stop due to a foot injury. Sarah currently loves making jellies, tending her garden, raising bunnies, sewing and hand-embroidery, and kayaking. She also loves reading books, and is trying to complete 30 books this year (she’s on #14).
Sarah and Jon both are always busy working on their 1-acre hobby farm with 12 raised beds, a 1/8th acre corn plot, 36 laying hens, and 14 rabbits (rabbit count subject to change).
Sarah was raised Church of Christ (baptized when she was 12), and Jon was a Southern Baptist. Once they started dating, Jon attended church with Sarah and was baptized in the same church she was when he was 20.
Jon later fell away from the faith for a few years, but God called him back. He went back to what was most comfortable: The Southern Baptist church. However, after several years of study, Jon and Sarah both agreed that something was missing, especially in regards to baptism. After
reading the Augsburg Confession and finding it the best and most faithful symbol of the faith, Jon and Sarah “walked down the hill” to join St John’s.
Jon’s biblical figure that is particularly meaningful to Jon is John the Baptist. Jon says he is dedicated to proclaiming the Kingdom of God, and is fearless in doing so. As his mother would say “he tells it like it is.”
Sarah’s favorite bible verse is Acts 16:31 – “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household. This verse was pivotal in shaping how she viewed salvation, baptism, and the faith.”
The best advice Jon ever received and would like to offer is “Never put your name on shoddy work. Also, put your name on everything you do.” Sarah’s advice is “Don’t do what’s easy. Do what’s right.”
Looking back at their lives today, Jon says what he is most proud of and what makes him smile are his wife and kids. They are a bottomless well of joy and pride for me.
Sarah says, “it makes me smile when people tell me little funny stories of how our kids have brought them joy.”
