Rejoice in the Lord
If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die we die to the Lord, so whether we live or die we belong to the Lord (Romans 14:8)
As most of you know, I was born and reared in Frendenstadt, a town in the Black Forest region of Germany during a difficult time in German history. The values I live by in my life are believing in and giving thanks to God, love, honestly, respect for others and being useful. These values were instilled in me by my dear parents. I still can hear my mother sing hymns and German songs as she did her daily work. Traits like being joyful, helping and looking out for others and to live a healthy life, I learned from her. She lived most of the last century, through two world wars (1905 to 1998). I still have many of her letters she wrote me over the years. She closed all of them with a scripture and “I love you”. Three weeks before the end of the second world war, my home town was completely destroyed – together with the beautiful church which played an important role in my youth. This church, built in 1599 in a 90-degree angle and the only one of its kind.
In Germany, after 1945 my father, my twin brother, Peter and I together with countless others cleared the rubbish of this church before it was rebuilt. To this day I stand in silence in the area in front of the altar, which I helped clear, remembering this time whenever I visit my home town. In 1951 I was confirmed in this reconstructed church and given the above-mentioned scripture. I just wish you all could see this beautiful building with its massive pipe organ (1400 pipes) and its eight bells in two towers which is one of the most recognized church bells in southern Germany. I miss the Sunday church bells a lot.
In 1963, my occupation in the field of printing and color reproductions brought me to this country, which has been my home ever since. I became a citizen in 1983. In 1991 I met and married Johanna in Augusta, Georgia, and we moved to Dickson. I have one son, Hans, from my previous marriage. He is a good hardworking man and I am very proud of him. In 1978, I was involved in an accident which left me unconscious for over three days and in which I also lost the use of my right eye. In 1995 I survived cancer and in 2008 had to have a quadruple heart bypass surgery - both with Johanna by my side. The Lord truly helped me to also overcome these difficult times.
I have been fortunate to travel extensively through the United States and numerous other countries, some trips business related. One of the most memorable trips was with friends on a three -week sailing trip from Nassau in the Bahamas to Kingston, Jamaica and back. For three weeks we were “forced” to eat lobster every day we harpooned while scuba diving. I enjoyed sailing and had a sailboat for many years. For many years I had my pilot license – both for gliders and power aircraft. My flying career came to a sudden end after the above-mentioned accident.
Johanna and I are proud of being charter members of St. John and my service as an elder. Often I wonder if I give enough thanks for all the blessings in my life? – St John, my marriage,
our home, my restored health, my upbringing and my ability to work and help others. Just to mention a few. Another one of my favorite scriptures is from Matthew 19:26. “With God, all things are possible” - short and to the point.
Next month will feature Martin’s wife Johannna.
