Sanctuary Fern Donations

The Church Council is seeking donations for purchasing four artificial ferns to place in the sanctuary. As the effort to update the sanctuary continues, we are requesting your ideas in making the sanctuary more aesthetically enhanced for worship. We greatly appreciate any help you may offer.

If you are interested, please see Mary Beth in the church office.

If you sponsor a fern, you won't have to water it!

Special Announcements – Quarterly Voters' Meeting Schedule Change

Special Announcements
Quarterly Voters' Meeting Schedule Change

The Church Council has voted to change the schedule for the quarterly voters' meetings. This new change will allow Sunday School to be held and will avoid Pastor Nathan needing to rush to the second service.

This change will be effective beginning with the June 29, 2025, voters' meeting. With this change, the schedule will align with the services held on the fifth Sunday of a month.

Sunday School will begin at 9 a.m. with the church service beginning at 10 a.m. The voters' meeting will follow the church service and will include a potluck meal.

Pastor Nathan will give special insight to the history of the Nicene Creed as we Commemorate the 1700th Anniversary of the Council of Nicaea 325 AD.

COUNCILS AND CONVENTIONS
THE NICENE CREED
THE COUNCIL OF NICAEA LCMS CONVENTIONS, AN OVERVIEW

"Seventeen hundred years ago this month, in May of A.D. 325, bishops from across Christendom gathered for the first official council in the history of the young Christian church" (Stacey Eising, editor of The Lutheran Witness).

We Believe – Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who, for us men for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

LWML News – Update from Nicole De Coux-Manners

Lois,

Thank you for your note! Indeed, I'm humbled and so grateful for the honor of receiving the Elizabeth Fedde Award - praise be to Jesus! It was quite the unexpected announcement when I found out about it! I'm preparing to fly out to Fort Wayne tomorrow (May 17) for my Final Formation Intensive and commencement ceremony on Friday. My husband will be joining me out there on Wednesday, and then we will return home on Saturday. However, although I'm participating in the commencement, I won't technically graduate until I complete summer quarter which includes my final two-week intensive in July. It's so unbelievable to me that almost two full years have passed since I began this program! It has been by the Lord's strength alone that I have been able to persevere through it with no breaks. Thank you and all the saints at St. John for your generosity, prayers, and support. It has meant so much to me to be supported in prayer by your congregation! I am blessed beyond measure!

You should soon be receiving my commencement announcement. It was important to me that your members could see what their generosity helped to bring about! In answer to your question about internship - because I am a distance student, the internship happens throughout the program within the student's home congregation and other ministry contexts they may serve in. I do serve at Mount Olive Lutheran in Folsom, but I don't foresee them being able to call me. However, I'm happy to serve in whatever way I can with the gifts that the Lord provides. I don't know what He has in store for me on the other side of August 5 when summer quarter ends, but I'm excited to find out!

May He richly bless your endeavors with VBS, and according to His will, may the weather cooperate so that the Gospel can be shared in abundance! I've attached a couple of newer pictures of the (grand)babies. Robin is getting so big, and now can say the common table prayer all by herself! Baby Rhys (pronounced Reese) is growing like a weed and already rolling over! He's definitely ready to start running after his big sister. We are grateful that he was brought into the Lord's Kingdom through Baptism on March 23.

In Christ,
Nicole

We will have our final door collection for Nicole on Sunday, June 29.
Please keep Nicole and her family in your prayers as she gets ready to start summer quarter.

Update from Our Adopted Deaconess Student

Update from our adopted deaconess student, Nicole De Coux-Manners
(Nicole was the recipient of the Elizabeth Fedde Award for outstanding service on May 13 at Kramer Chapel, Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft. Wayne, Indiana.)

May 'Witness': The Nicene Creed

STACEY EISING
MAY 15, 2025

In May of A.D. 325, Emperor Constantine called together the Council of Nicaea, assembling bishops from across Christendom to settle several matters of controversy. It was the first council of its scope in the history of the church. The council defended Christ's nature as "of the same substance" with God the Father against the heretic Arius. Most of the Nicene Creed, which we still recite in our churches today, was written at the council as well.

The May issue of The Lutheran Witness celebrates this anniversary with articles on the history of the Council of Nicaea, on the biblical foundations of the Nicene Creed, and on how Lutherans view the authority of early church councils.

"We don't 'wink' when we make this confession our own every Sunday in the Divine Service," writes LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison in his monthly reflection. "We do so in the sight of God Almighty, knowing that this is the faith we shall one day confess before the judgment seat of Christ."

For this issue, we have also taken the occasion to discuss the purpose of our LCMS conventions, both district and Synod, and to highlight several notable moments in LCMS convention history, from the early days of the Synod to the theological controversies of the 1970s.

As we reflect on the history of the church and her life together this month, and as we continue through district convention season to prepare for the 69th Regular Convention of the LCMS next July, we benefit from the encouragement of Synod Secretary Rev. Dr. John W. Sias, who writes, "We would be fools to believe that there is nothing out of joint in our Synod today. We need the Word of God to work on us all, to work in love at convincing one another of the truth. God grant that our conventions above all address these matters, after the example of the apostolic church. … May our conventions be [Christ's] instrument, the Word of God reigning in them over us, and all our people doing together the hard work that calls for, and serves, faith" (p. 19).
