MEMBER PROFILE: EDWIN & SANDRA HARRINGTON
Edwin was born in Dickson, Tennessee at Jackson Clinic in 1948. When he was five years old his family moved to Burns on his birthday. Edwin has lived on the same property for 72 years. He attended church and school (1st-8th grade) in Burns. He went to Dickson for his high school years. Edwin attended Austin Peay State College and then transferred to the University of Tennessee and received his degree in Business Administration.
After graduation Edwin worked for Third National Bank, State of Tennessee, and was a boilermaker. Edwin also started a cattle business, and he worked for Caster Knott in the men's department as a suit specialist. Edwin is now retired.
Sandra was born in Granite City, Illinois. Her family has family roots in Dickson County, Tennessee. Sandra moved in 1958 to the small community of Bellsburg, Charlotte, Tennessee. She went to a one room school with no inside bathrooms, but they did have outhouses. Sandra said she would not change anything for the great education she received there. When explaining her experiences at the one room schoolhouse she says "That's a whole other story."
Sandra's first six years of school were in this one room schoolhouse. The church she attended was next door to the school. Sandra and her family moved to Charlotte, Tennessee when Sandra was a Freshman in high school.
While attending Charlotte High School, Sandra worked at Chappell Cee Bee. After graduation she worked 19 years in banking. She then worked 28 years at a law firm in Dickson where she retired in 2021. Sandra now lives in Burns with "my great husband, Edwin."
Sandra and Edwin have traveled many states and several countries. Now that they are retired, Sandra says, "we are campers." We love camping especially with our camping friends.
Family Information:
Edwin's parents are deceased. He has one sister, Lillian Mize, who lives in Tennessee City.
Sandra's parents are deceased. She has two sisters, Janelle Durham and Jean Peeler who both live in Charlotte, Tennessee. Sandra's brother Robert Von Schmittou passed away with cancer at the age of 61. Her sister, Judy Von Schmittou, passed away in 1954, at the age of 2.
Edwin is a survivor of cancer. He was diagnosed in 2019 and had surgery to treat this cancer. In 2023, Edwin was diagnosed with skull cancer where he was treated with radiation and chemotherapy while in Florida. He also had cancer surgery in 2024 and in 2025. Sandra says "He is still kicking. Thank You JESUS!"
Sandra has one son, Phillip Street. Philip and his wife Amber live in Milan, Tennessee. They have a daughter Sara Street. Their granddaughter, Sara, recently married Brody J. Raines on August 15th of this year. The Harringtons held a wedding reception for them at St. John FLC on August 16th. Brody and Sara reside in Tahlequah, OK with a criminal justice degree. Sara and Brody both are employed by the State of Oklahoma.
Sandra and Edwin began attending St. John after Sandra's brother, Robert and his wife, Lynne invited them to go with them. Sandra stated that they had been searching for a church for a long time.
Sandra and Edwin have put many bible verses to memory that they go to daily. Sandra said most of them are about Trust and Faith so that we can remember them when we need them the most.
Sandra says she and Edwin spend time reading their Bibles and inspirational books. She notes they spend time together in prayer.
Sandra says, "Our advice would be to pray together. Pray about everything and give thanks in all circumstances. It works."
Sandra and Edwin say that the people that make them smile would be each other, our families, and our dear Christian friends.

2025 LUTHERAN WOMEN IN MISSION SUNDAY - TALKING POINTS
Over 80 Years of History!
Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) was established in 1942 as the official women's auxiliary of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Beginning with the launch of our new logo in 2023, we have shifted toward the use of the descriptive phrase Lutheran Women in Mission. This phrase clearly states who we are and what we do.
Lutheran Women in Mission:
As Lutheran Women in Mission, we joyfully proclaim Christ, support missions, and equip women to honor God by serving others. On Lutheran Women in Mission Sunday we remember our past and look to the future.
Mites, Missions, and Mustard Seeds:
Based on the biblical account of the widow's mite (Luke 21:1-4), the Mite Box is intended for regular contributions of "mites" - offerings above and beyond the support given to congregations and the LCMS. The Mite Box is more than just a symbol of God's provision - it's a reminder that your offerings and prayers bring the love and hope of Jesus to those in need. You can also donate online at lwml.org/donate-online to make giving easy!
Making an Impact at Home and Abroad:
As Lutheran Women in Mission, we know it's an honor to serve God by serving others. We serve local organizations with Gifts from the Heart, Mission Service Activities, and Special Offerings. And through a careful selection process, we choose mission grant recipients from around the world each biennium. Starting with one grant of $15,000 our mission grant goal continues to grow each biennium. In 2025, a Mission Goal of $2,622,270 was approved to fund 33 grants.
Mustard Seed Daily Devotions:
The seed of the mustard plant is among the smallest of seeds, yet from this small seed grows a large bush. Jesus used the analogy of a mustard seed to show how something small and seemingly insignificant can have a powerful impact. Like the analogy, our Mustard Seed Daily Devotions are short devotions, small seeds of faith, that are great for your spiritual growth, and are easy to sow by sharing with friends.
Join us for the next chapter of the journey!
Membership is available to any woman who is a communicant member of a congregation in The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Learn more about how to get involved at lwml.org/membership.
