MEMBER PROFILE: KAY & BRUCE BURNETT
Bruce was born in Queens Village, Long Island, NY. He is an only child. Bruce and his family moved to Sydney, NY, and then to Nineveh Junction on his father's family property. In 11th grade Bruce moved to Lantana, Florida then back to family property in Nineveh Junction. Bruce graduated from High School in 1958 when he was salutatorian of his class.
After graduation Bruce went to the University of Florida majoring in engineering. After one year he did not feel engineering was the career for him. He returned to NY and attended Broome Technical Community thinking maybe a different engineering program would be better. After some encouragement from his family, he decided to major in Education. Bruce ended up at Southern Connecticut State College where he obtained a BS and MS in Elementary Education.
While attending Connecticut State College Bruce lived with his Godfather, Uncle George Wallace. In his first semester at Southern Connecticut State he received a letter from Selective Service to report back to Norwich NY. He passed the test but during his interview the Master Sergeant told him that he was dismissed due to the idea that he was studying to be an elementary school teacher and that was more important.
Kay was born in New Haven, Connecticut. She moved to Seymour, Connecticut until she was married to Bruce in 1967. When Kay was 10 years old her mother went back to work 30 miles from their home. Kay was then responsible for preparing all the meals for her family except on Sunday and caring for her brother that was 4 years younger.
After high school, Kay graduated from Southern Connecticut State College with a BS and MS in Elementary Education.
Kay and Bruce met at Southern Connecticut State College when Kay was in her last semester. They met in Adolescent Psychology class. Bruce always sat in the front and Kay sat in the back. They married in 1967 and 3 years later moved to Naples, Florida. Kay was 7 months pregnant with their 1st child when they moved.
An interesting story about their move to Florida was that they were separated on the way to Florida on the George Washington Bridge. Bruce called Kay's mother in Connecticut and told her that they were separated, and he would sleep in a rest area until Kay could meet up with him again. Kay and her friends headed to the rest stop and met up with him after spending the night in a hotel.
Kay and Bruce have two children Erik (55 years old) and Jill (52 years old). They have 1 grandson, 2 step grandchildren and 1 step great grandchild. Kay and Bruce enjoyed camping with their children even taking them on a cross-country camping trip at one time. Kay and Bruce have visited all 50 of the US states and have traveled to several countries in Europe and Asia including all the way to Russia.
Kay taught Elementary Education for 37 years and Bruce taught Elementary Education for 36 years in Connecticut and Florida.
Kay and Bruce lived 33 years in Florida. They had a summer cabin in Blairsville, GA for 14 years. The reason they ended up in Tennessee is their son lived in Hermitage, TN and daughter lived in North Carolina. They wanted to all live together, so they bought property in Cumberland Furnace, TN. They all live on the same property. They came to St. John because they were Lutheran.
Kay has many hobbies. She loves painting, mostly acrylics, crewel, knitting, crocheting, and card making. Bruce enjoys wood carving, growing all types of plants, and gardening. Bruce and Kay are both avid readers. Kay and Bruce carve out time every morning for daily devotions. Kay is reading the Chronological Bible at present.
Kay's favorite bible verse is John 10:9: "I am the door if anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture."
Bruce's favorite bible verse is the 23rd Psalm.
Kay and Bruce's best advice is to follow the golden rule: Do unto others as they do unto you. They feel everyone is important no matter what your job is.
When asked, "Looking back at your life today, what are you most proud of or makes you smile?" Kay stated that she is proud of her children. Bruce is very proud that he lives near his children, and they take care of each other.

MUSTARD SEED DAILY DEVOTIONS
Hagar - Caught in a Triangle of Trouble
In the Word
(Hagar's Story: Genesis 16:1-16; 21:8-21)
"And the angel of the Lord said to her [Hagar], 'Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because the Lord has listened to your affliction.'" - Genesis 16:11
Of the Word
Interfering with God's plan produced nothing but discord in Hagar's life. While both were advanced in age, God had promised Abraham and Sarah a child. Tired of waiting, Sarah gave her slave Hagar to Abraham as a wife with no objection from Abraham. When Hagar became pregnant she treated Sarah with contempt. Sparks began to fly between them.
None of the characters in this plot are innocent. Instead of waiting for God, Sarah devised her own plan. When Hagar became pregnant, she forgot her status as slave and was contentious toward Sarah. Being spiritual head of the household, Abraham should not have agreed to Sarah's scheming in the first place.
In some situations we may have acted as Sarah, Hagar, or Abraham did. Triangles of trouble do come our way. They happen in families, between coworkers and supervisors, and sadly, even in church. So what do we do when we're caught in the middle?
"Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another as God in Christ forgave you." - Ephesians 4:31-32
Walking with my Lord
By Your example, Lord, help me be kind to all You have put on my path. In Jesus' name. Amen.
