Member Spotlight With Nancy Gray
Jack and Janice Brown
Janice was born Indiana. She was raised with one brother and three sisters. Janice went to a Lutheran school and church. While she was in high school Janice worked at a Photo shop. Later she was employed at Magnavox and then General Electric. Janice says at one point she thought of joining the Army. But her brother who was in the army at the time said join the Marines. But she decided not to because she just “forgot about it”.
Janice met Jack through Janice’s dad. Her dad worked with Jack. One evening her dad invited Jack and another person over to their house. They saw each other off and on after that. Then one evening at Janice’s house Jack and Janice were sitting at table with Janice’s mom and dad. Her dad began talking about someone he knew that was getting that was getting married. Jack said I would like to marry your daughter. Janice said her dad pushed his chair back and starting laughing because he did not expect it. Jack and Janice were married in 1963. They were married during the annual shutdown of International Harvester. Jack and Janice have four children, Helena, Roy, Pam and Sara. They have six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Jack was born in Jericho Texas in 1931. Jack had two sisters, one two years older and one two years younger. He was drafted in the 1952 during the Korean Conflict. He was asked what military branch he wanted to be placed. Jack said it doesn’t matter you are gonna put me where you want. Jack spent two years in the Marines. Jack says I was a “few of the few”. Jack was in staging in Japan when the Korean War Armistice was declared. After leaving the Marine Corps, Jack started college Oklahoma City University.
After graduation he went on to work for International Harvester where he worked for 36 years.
Jack bought a house before they were married in New Haven Indiana. Janice says they were always cold in the house. Jack figured out the thermostat was next to the chimney. So, it did not take Jack long to move it and then Janice said they were much warmer J. They lived there from 1963-1975.
Then Jack and Janice moved to Janice’s family land also in Indiana and built a new house. Jack did all of the inside construction except painting and staining the wood, which was done by Janice. Janice enjoyed driving a school bus for 11 years while living in Indiana.
Jack and Janice bought the Lobelville property in 1980 but did not build their present house until 1994. They have lived there ever since.
Janice loves crafts. She has made 2 quilts by hand. She has done all types of needlework including knitting and tatting angels. She also loves gardening and working in her flower beds. Janice sings in the Choir for the first service.
Jack says he was a “jack of all trades master of none”. Jack even rebuilt a 1952 Studebaker. Janice says there was not much he could not do.
After moving to Tennessee, they attended the Lutheran Church in Bellevue until St John was established in Dickson County. Janice and Jack are charter members of St. John.
The 23rd Psalm is Janice’s favorite Bible verse.
The best advice Janice says she can give is to be patient and forgiving. Jack said I have a lot of advice but I keep it to myself adding you learn a lot more from listening.
Looking back at their life today, Janice and Jack say they are most proud of their children, daughter-in-law, son-in law and their grandchildren.
